How The Board Feet are calculated?
To calculate the board feet one has to measure the length, width, and thickness of the lumber piece. The best way is to measure all dimensions in inches. To calculate board foot by measurements in inches follow the below steps.
- Measure the length of the lumber piece in inches, for example, we consider the length as 200 inches.
- Measure the Width of the lumber piece in inches as well, let us consider the width as 50 inches for now.
- Now measure the thickness of the lumber piece in inches, consider the thickness as 2 inches.
Board Foot: 200 inches (length) X 50 inches (Width) X 2 inches (Thickness)
Divide Length & Width which is in inches by 12 to convert them into feet:
= (200/12) X (50/12) X (2)
=16.6666 x 4.1666 x 2
= 138.88 Board Feet
Note: If measurements are taken in feet then there is no need to convert them into feet by dividing by 12, simply multiply Length(Feet) X Width (Feet) X Thickness(inches).
